Every year for his birthday Calvin celebrated by quasi “filibustering” the Genevan Senate with a reading from Augustine’s City of God
He never had to pay up.
Eventually, the council was so fed up with the event that they decreed that Calvin could only do the reading if he allowed a group of Anabaptists to sing songs while he read.
That was the end of public celebrations of Calvin’s birthday while he was alive.
